Out of Place

Out of place, is the way he feels

This feeling is actually real

Like a cardinal in a flock of pigeons

Out of place he feels

Taking strolls through the city

Like a mouse in a jungle

Out of place he feels.

Oh look, he's not white!
Let's all stare

The color of his skin

Makes it feel like a sin

His cultural beliefs

Have his people crying in grief

The scars of whips

Engraved for eternity

On the backs of his ancestors

That fought the same war

He faces today

All of the blood

All of the tears

All of the sweat

All of the pain

Was it all a waste?

The underground railroad, freeing his people to the North

The civil war, fighting for the abolition of his peoples enslavement

The montgomery bus boycott, fighting for what his people believe stood right

The civil rights movement, protesting those people who deemed them unequal

Present day, what comes next….

He takes a knee for the injustice of his people.

The words and actions of his people sculptured a legacy

Harriet Tubman, paving a way out

Rosa Parks, saying “Nah”

Dr. Martin Luther King, “ I have a dream”

Jackie Robinson, Sliding straight through the color barrier

He now entertains the thought of who comes next…..

Colin Kaepernick

Harriet

Rosa

Dr.King

Jackie…

Colin

Palestine, fighting for the land of your own country

9/11, fighting the fact you will be criticized for who you are

Fighting the fact that innocent people are being killed in your home country everyday due to war

Fighting the resistance of your roots being torn out

He begins to cherish his roots
Like a big strong tree he stands his ground
Letting people act like hounds

He begins to think
Everyone out of place has left their mark
Allowing others to stay in the dark
Then in all syncs in
He tells his people, near and far
Be proud of who are you are!

Imam Ali, “Silence is the best reply to a fool”

Khalil Gibran, loving the enemy inside of you

Linda Sarsour, marching through the blockade muslims face today

Now who comes next………
