Outside the Margins
In humanity we find
Inhumanity. We find
Humanity defined in a way
That stretches believability,
Bending over backwards
To bend us over. Back towards
That animal kingdom we're pushed,
Stripped of our community
And communicated to like children,
A group without voice beyond
That of their assigned guardian—
Guard, even, in the way they stifle
What speech we muster.
What speech we must hear
Is never our own, never our voice;
Never our choice of words,
For as "children" we cannot be trusted to choose.
After all, we might make the wrong choice,
Speak the wrong voice,
Stretching the definition to include rather than avoid us
As human.
