Overcome

Because I’m Black, Should I waste away my life? And make sure to forget all the racial strife? Because I’m Black, Does that mean I can fail out of school? Even though people fought for my education? May I ignore the teacher and all the rules? Because I’m Black, can I carry a gun? Not like Huey Newton who did it to protect against racism, But rather because it’s cool or for any of the other reasons under the sun? No. I’ve decided, Because I’m Black, I will no longer let stereotypes define me, Because people have worked too hard to set us all free. There’s more to me, Than what the eye can see, And like those who paved the road for equality, I’ll extend my heart, My time, My Hand, For those of the future showing humanity. From this day forward, With my head held high, I’ll live “We Shall Overcome”, Until my spirit is welcomed into the sky.

There’s more to me, Than what the eye can see, And like those who paved the road for equality, I’ll extend my heart, My time, My Hand, For those of the future showing humanity. Your voice is quite strong here, & I like how you mention what is happening now, a lot people here only talk about the past but you make it clear that the problem isn't over. Because I’m Black, can I carry a gun? Not like Huey Newton (((who did it protect against racism,))) --awkward, plus I am not sure what you are saying here But rather because it’s cool or for any of the other reasons under the(sun? I know you want to rhyme here, but the sentence is too long so it misses the catch mark. You know what I mean? That said, you either have to rhyme multiple words together or cut the sentence up I’ve decided, Because I’m Black, I will no longer let stereotypes define me, Because people have worked too hard to set us all free. ---out or sync but strong otherwise. From this day forward, With my head held high, I’ll live “We Shall Overcome”, (a little funny on my tongue. :/ should it be "I sing it, " we should overcome'"? Until my spirit is welcomed into the sky. ---great finish!
