OVERDUE APOLOGY

You picked me up when I hit the rocks,

yet I didn't thank you.

Late nights, I'm too drunk to stand.

You drive the hour, you get me home and

put me to bed.

I didn't thank you.

I used you. That's what people said

because I never thanked you.

"What does she mean to you?" they would ask.

Is she really just a friend, you do everything

for her.

She never thanks you.

Ungrateful, unappreciative, a burden.

That's how they describe me.

Because I didn't thank you.

You risked your life. You lost

your friends.

Yet I didn't thank you.

I didn't thank you,

maybe I didn't know how.

How do you thank the person who would die for you?

How do you say thank you when

"Thank you."

doesn't seem to be enough.

Today I am thankful, for you.

Thankful for your generosity.

Thankful for your kindness.

Thankful that you became my family,

and did what you could to fix my mess

of a life.

Thankful for the safety, the security,

you provide.

Thankful for the understanding, when I said I

would have rather died.

Today I am thankful for my best friend.

Today I am thankful to be alive.

Today I am thankful for you,

even though thank you doesn't seem to be enough.
