The Painter

Dolores Mourningway July 1st 1967- November 2nd 2031 A dreamer of sunsets, ocean shores and passion was I, Finding hope in the darkest fractures, Until I met this cosmic soul- This esoteric, ardent one. Now I know what mother meant; Look deep into man’s adorned eye, For then, mind will meet soul. Dark nights there were, many without light. “Let us paint the sky with stars,” said he, His eyes cloaked by a velvet blanket of ebony. Yet all comes to a subtle end, As seasons come and go. His footprints leave eternal burdens, Upon my heaving chest. A nightmare in the midnight. I need no more time down here, I knew I had to go; If I was more right than now, I shall never know. For, I suppose, I am now one of those unfathomable many stars. The Painter In Depth Dolores Mourningway is a typical character who goes through love and heart break. She was born in the ‘The Summer of Love’, in 1967. July 1st symbolizes the first day of a new beginning, thus, her bright and passionate outlook in life. Dolores lives for 64 years. In “The Beatles’” famous song, “When I’m 64,” they ask their partner if they will still be loved at age sixty-four. Dolores dies at age sixty-four, signifying her ultimate crumble to pieces, because her companion no longer took care of her and loved her. The name, Dolores Mourningway, itself, already sets a sad and sorrowful tone. When pronounced, Dolores is interchangeable with the word dolorous, a synonym for miserable and anguished. Her last name, Mourningway, also defines a depressing atmosphere. “The Painter” contains a significant moral. Dolores falls head over heels for the wrong person, and disregards her mother’s advice she once received. It is she, who reflects back on the wise words, how every woman should look into the pathway to one’s companion’s soul- the eye. No matter how much they try to cover up evil intentions, the eye gives way to the essence of one’s character. It is difficult to understand whether Dolores was happy with her final decision of suicide or if she regrets it, like she states herself. However, this mourning woman is able to find comfort that she still will be a part of the sky her and her lover once painted so long ago.
