Pan Slam

"I challenge you."

I say to the back of a god

(Not like I wasn't a god myself)

"I challenge you."

I repeat, hyping myself up

but a little voice in my head begins asking

"You Pan?

The god of woodland creatures

are seriously going to challenge the god of music

to a play-off?

With your little reed flute?

He's apart of a show band and

you know how serious those bands are about their music.

And you are going to challenge him?"

The voice quickly goes away

with a vigorous shake of my horned head

and I stare at the back of Apollo

with his stupid hair

with his stupid lyre

and his stupid feet

(I hate feet)

and say

"You'll challenge me

unless . . .

you're chicken."

This caught his attention.

With a slow turn and an annoying smirk on his lips,

he faces me

"Alright . . .  we'll play, goat, and we'll let the people judge."

(He's totally not the god of original insults that's for sure)

"'kay"

I say a little nervous because

I had only made this flute a couple years ago

but I feel confident in my playing skills

I was first chair for a reason.

The crowd made a large circle around the two of  us.

I grab my reed flute from my pal Midas

and begin playing.

The piece I play is lively

with many trills and syncopated rythms.

At the end of this tiring piece I trill a long note

and slowly put up a finger to tell Apollo he's number one

(you get it)

which brings a collective gasp throughout the crowd.

Apollo, still with a smirk on his lips, flourishes his lyre out of

somewhere, his pocket maybe? Who cares.

He begins his piece which starts off alright

nothing to brag about

but then

he begins singing!

"This is a play-off dude, not a sing-off!"

Midas yells

Apollo ignores him and continues performing.

After he's done, the crowd erupts into applause

all except Midas.

Apollo sees him and walks over to him

and the crowd parts like the Red Sea.

(Yes I know about this event don't be surprised)

"You think goat was better?"

he asks all in Midas's face

"Yeah I do 'cause he didn't cheat."

Midas says all in Apollo's face.

(Never ever ever get in a god's face just trust me)

With a mere glance, Apollo turns Midas's ear into donkey ears

"Since you clearly can't hear true music,

you deserve an ass's ears."

Apollo says and disappears and so does the crowd after a while.

Midas and I stare at each other

and then we burst out laughing.

"You l. . l . . look . . ridiculous!"

I stammer.

"Oh, these,"

he says with his hand on his hips

"they look nice don't you think?

They're a little bit bland for my taste though."

"Thanks for voting for me, Midas"

I say blushing a bit.

"No prob, 'goat'. You did great! I would fist bump you, but you know."

I smile

it's nice having true friends.

The play-off may not have turned out how I wanted it

but I had fun.
