Pandora's Cookie Jar

They always tell me not to reach for the jar

So I don't

But as I walk in the kitchen and I glance up at the high shelf

I see the glass jar

So many round bites of sugar

For I have a sweet tooth

My mother makes the cookies often

But she never shares

Not even dad gets any

Why mom?

I can smell the sweet sugar spew out of the oven

I imagine myself biting into the cookie

Feeling the crunch in my mouth and tasting the sweetness

For sugar is my addiction

I am curious though

May I not have the cookies?

You let me eat all other types of sugar

Why can't I eat this one?

But when she is not here

I climb up and I stretch my arm out as high as I can

I grab the jar but the weight is too much

I fall back

I'm sitting on the counter top now

My feet are in the sink of dirty dishes

The jar is in my hands

I reach for the lid but I hesitate

I remeber her words

"Do not eat the cookies Sierra"

But I ignore her words

I open the glass jar and my fingers reach for the cookie at the top

I take that first bite

I feel and explosion of flavor in my mouth

One cookies, turns to two, then four

Five cookies now

I feel stuffed

But the flavor is addictive

But the feeling fades

My breathing is decreasing

I feel something caught in my throat

I, I can't breath

I fall to the ground and I am laying there on the cold tile

I hear footsteps

My mom emerges and she sees me

Then she turns around and runs up the stairs

I hear her shouting

"Terry! Get the EpiPen"

My mom runs back to me and my dad follows

He takes a cap off of a tube thing

I see a needle

My dad takes it and pierces the skin on my thigh

I can breath again

My mother craddles my head

Then we get in the car and I'm fastened in my carseat

I think we are going to the hospital

My mother looks at me

And I know I made a mistake

Just because of my curiousity
