The paper cup clause
I woke up this morning apprehensively screaming your name
The sound of the radio in the morning hush reminds me of the promise you made to hear me no matter
how far apart we got
I guess it was one of those promises you say but in no way mean
The goodbye kisses all forgotten
and faces washed and fingernails cleaned
and smiles deflated and meaningful earworms replaced with new songs
Sometimes I feel like the future we dreamed when we laid together was a game we played
to pass the time
I guess we've got bigger fish to fry now
You're off to your next chapter
but I'm a slow reader
but I think we knew when we started that we couldn't keep on the same page
I remember sitting in your lap and praying that no one I knew would see
Now I sit along on the blue linoleum and ignore everyone
They don't worry about me anymore except that
'Kay seems a little reclusive lately. I wonder what's wrong.'
I feel like the times we had were a dream that I had on a particularly lonely night
Trying to remember is like catching clouds to cream my coffee
It's like you were never here
but then how do you explain this hole in my chest
I certainly didn't put it there and I never let anyone come as close as you did
Like filling a paper cup with the heart of me
I can't combine oranges and psychological concepts that way
Metaphysical lyricism has never been harder
Anyway, I love you
But I think maybe you knew that already
