Pappou and the Stars
My pappou explained the scale of love
First you love your parents
Then you love your spouse
After you love your children
But the greatest love of all is the love for your grandchildren
Always lively and prideful
Sang to me constantly
First sang to me about the cat
Then sang to me about the farm
But my favorite song of all was about my hair
A love for history
I acquired this love from you
Listen to you telling me stories for hours
Your broken English helping me to understand
I never fully grasped the stories
But I was happy to have been there with you
Weaker
You grew powerless as a wilted weeping flower as cancer overtook you
You still held on for a strong fight
It was getting close to the time
But I will never forget those words you told me on that summer day
Muffled phone
A continent apart
είναι καιρός να γίνω αστέρι στον ουρανό
Tears overwhelmed my eyes
But what you do not know is that those words imprinted in my mind
I will never forget
The three days before you died
I refused to see you in your deathbed
You were in a coma
But then you woke and asked for me
You looked at me
I could see the smile your eyes
I could see the stars in your eyes
Now that I look at you
I do not look at you in your deathbed
But I look at you in the sky, my beautiful star
And for that I am happy
Even if you are not with me, you are not suffering
But pappou, what I wanted to tell you all this time is that you forgot a scale of love
The love a grandchild has for their grandparents
