Parents

Growing up, I had it easy

My parents were young when the responsibility of parenthood was dropped onto their shoulders

By twenty, my mom had two young kids, looking back now I see that she was just a kid

We never went without, we had whatever our heart desired: nike on feet, brand name tees

I could do cheer, or dance, or whatever I pleased - I even got my very own car at 16

I thought we were rich, or atleast well off, until I realized my parents struggled and struggled but played it off

Now that I am older, it doesn't feel so easy

I feel drowned by the envy of friends whose parents pay their way through school, who give them 20k for their dream wedding,

for friends who finished college in 4-years and studied abroad without a worry in the world.

I am twenty-three and just finished my associates degree

I work full-time and feel crippled by the stress of tuition, books, softwares for each class

I feel pressure to save up for a house, a wedding, a future life

I am grateful of how hard my parents worked to make us feel like we had it all

But when I graduated high school, the reality struck

That is why I want to set myself for up for success. I will pinch pennies and live within my means.

I will work hard at my full-time job while I pursue my degree

Even if it's just a piece a paper, I want to make sure if I have kids I can set them up financially

better than what was done for me.
