Passing of Daddy's Hands

Our fingers interlocked,

it felt safe.

When we sat in church together,

I would pray.

Pray that our fingers interlocked,

that they would stay.

Stay awhile daddy,

hold my hand.

Lets compare their features,

I demand.

My hand soft, his rough,

I don't understand.

They look just alike,

lefthand and right hand.

You see, anytime that we met,

our hands were held.

Mine is his, his in mine, we should've had clay,

to have had them moddeled.

Looking at each other in the back seat,

while mom is driving.

Knowing that any moment that where we're going,

we will be shortly be arriving.

So we held hands tighter,

until we knew our drive had ended.

Just waiting and waiting,

wishing the miles could've been extended.

However, we knew our ride was imminent,

thats when our fingers would loosen and unlock.

If only we knew how to slow down time,

to stop the determined clock.

We had visitation days too, but when those would end,

he and I would part and leave.

Hoping to see each other soon,

it won't be long, we believe.

I wouldn't expect you to understand,

the very few times we got to greet.

Every visit, every moment together,

always felt incomplete.

We knew the hours of those days were short,

and thats when we would grieve.

Those days, those hours, and those moments,

it was much to bereave.

But nothing compared to what was to come,

when our visits would be no more.

When I got to bring you home, I knew our time was short,

but I didn't think of us not getting to hold hands anymore.

So I take a picture of my hand in his,

before we know we have to close the door.

Not just any door you see,

but the door that separated him and me.

A door on Earth,

and a door in Heaven.

Then I remembered,

what a blessing.

Not a blessing that his hands are gone from me,

but one that gave me hope.

The kind of hope that gives recomfort,

and helps me cope.

What a blessing it will be,

when we meet again.

Even though only our Father in Heaven,

knows when.

I set here today and pray,

and do so with all my might.

That his hands and mine,

they will reunite.

When our hands were together,

we had it made.

Because our fingers interlocked,

it felt safe.
