passion dies (passion dies)

I spend my 21st birthday alone

Fitting - I've spent most of this year alone, too

This evening, like all evenings, consists of pawing through scraps

Other people's discarded junk

Trying to find shreds and shards of myself in the rubble

But coming up short each time.

I go to the theater to numb my guilt, drown out my consciousness

Mostly to remember how to pretend, how to be that person I used to be

When I had no use for the person I m

21st birthday and I don't even have a sample bottle of vodka to pour in some Sprite

Because my state I.D. is still sitting in the DMV

Waiting for me to come get it and usher myself into the world of adulthood

But I can't bring myself to do that just yet

So instead I go to the theater, again and again

I miss the days that I didn't have to struggle to recall the lyrics

But things are different now

So I look into the future and take deep breaths
