Pay it forward

I’m going to do it. I’m going to do a nice thing perhaps, the nicest thing I can think to do in the moment. A momentary insight to the map of my moral compass, encompassing everything I believe to be good and right in the world. Please, don’t think of me as some herculean hero, nor a chivalrous superman, this is simply something I suppose should be the not the exception, but the rule. A code of conduct in which we as comrades should conduct ourselves. Our obligation to the ostentatious nature of man…and women…woven like fabric we feel our ephemeral need, nay, duty, to feed our less fortunate. I could tell by her tired, messy bun hair and clearance rack attire that it was a trifle thing to spend just a little extra so I could buy her 7 dollar iced mocha latte with 2 pumps of sugar and an extra shot of espresso. It was the least I could do. With nary a motive and a proud smile I only left her with a whisper “pay it forward”. I walked out with my head held high, this, the highlight of my day, knowing that faith had been once again restored to humanity, by my random act of kindness. My day would have been perfect had I not caught the eyes of the homeless beggar outside the store, cup and sign in hand, to jostle me out from my joviality. Ugh. Get a job.
