Peace Impart

Bleak midwinter, troubled heart-

Come to me and peace impart-

Reach through this wall of stone-

That cages me inside alone-

For even if the stone is only sand-

It burns at the touch of mortal hands;

Nowhere no time to be free,

And this cage is breaking me-

Anger erodes my tangled soul-

Fragments trying to be whole-

Child of Bethlehem, still and small-

Take my hand before I fall-

Restless and chained I’m bleeding inside,

And all the while I’m trying to hide-

Please, dear Child, calm my being,

And let my faith surpass my seeing-

Take this frustration I feel for myself,

And let me bless someone else;

I’m rusting in my inability to trust-

Dear Child, turn my rotten pride to dust-

I hate my own salty tears,

And I detest my lack of progress through the years;

Please, my Child and my God-

See through my smiling facade-

Exactly as I am love me-

Please, dear Child, see some beauty-

For how can I bring light to anyone else-

When Your light is dim inside myself?

Come be born in me and stay-

My heart is a manger for you to lay-

Broken and rickety as it may be-

With You within, it will reach eternity;

Like you, dear Infant, let me rest-

Trustfully on Mary’s breast-

Unafraid of death of shame-

Soothed by Mary in my pain;

Bleak midwinter, troubled heart-

Come to me and peace impart-

Dear Child, on this Christmas day-

Please come to me and do not delay-

Let me like the shepherds see-

The simpleness of eternity-

For I am worn and weary like they-

Broken on my knees before the Babe in the hay-

Waiting for the Gift already given-

Blinded by my exhaustion and my sin-

Please, Infant, take the darkness from my eyes,

And let me see Your Star in the skies-

For though I have not frankincense nor myrrh nor gold-

I am giving You my heart to hold,

And though I know it’s broken and rough-

It’s what You asked for so I know it’s enough.
