A Peace of Mind
You wake up blinded by the sun.
Hot sand imprinted on your cheek.
A breeze tickles your skin, drawing your eyes to dense vegetation.
Lifting your head, all you're taken aback.
Because, all you can see is hot sand and dense vegetation.
Miles of shoreline lazily stretch out into the horizon.
Your heart skips. Once, twice.
By the third, you've shot up like an Olypmic runner.
Breathing uneven, feet still asleep scarambling for coordination.
Footfall after footfall you run and you run, and you run.
The miles are giving you a lazy smile now as the stretch out even further
Distancing you from your imaginary escape.
Lungs in overdrive, you collapse and kneel in defeat.
On your back, blindly staring at your new blue ceiling.
No one to rescue you, nothing to aid you.
Alone.
You turn the word over. Taste the vowels in your mouth, flex your tongue to form the word.
Over and over you test out the word
Something is missing. Something important. Something you should have.
A sense of fear, desolation maybe?
You realize your initial reactions were just that: reactions.
Your body responding to a situation but not mentally processing.
Instantly, you relax into the sand.
No escape, no interaction, nothing.
Nothing, but your peace of mind.
The only thing you'll ever need.
