That Peach

That Peach

A peach, orangey in the sun
looks around to see what she has done
But she knows that the seed
in which she came from
and tells the world that she will SUCCEED
YES INDEED!

From the soil which showed her beauty
At the first sight they were all carefree
The skin within the complexion yeah the interior
Without feeling bad because those other Dole peaches weren’t so superior

Seen at local fruit stands like my Negro race
sitting in these hard to breathe unattractive crates
Yeah and I’m pretty sure that, that white man sold me at a fast pace.
Like hey Ma’am these ones right here are 40¢ per pound
cleaned up in my best in this segregated town

And I try my best to swallow my pride
Because I know who I am, and what my ancestors have done on my side.
Because that peach that made it this far through all the bug bites and pesticides
Just confides

And you ask me how I think of them I think it’s better off if I don’t reply

MY ONLY QUESTION TO THEM IS WHY?

I am who I am
An intelligent female with confidence
But I will tell you this I won’t be the one that’ll be silenced.
