Pearl Earrings

“Nobody can give you anything that you don’t already have."

We are sitting on parallel twin beds,

But I have a kettle of tea on the stove

And I realize I’m in possession of an entire adult wardrobe.

“The thing you’re worried about, you’re not going to get it from someone else. It’s been inside you, you have it, you’re all there. You’re complete. You have all of you. I promise.”

When I was five I swore high heels were for attention seekers,

I never thought I’d see the day I had them sitting next to my bedpost.

She tells me that I couldn’t possibly practice what I preach

And she wants back what he took from her.

With uncertainty, I blink

I think about how you lead a horse to water but can’t make him drink.
