What makes us people?
Is it our outsides?
Two arms, two legs, one head
Our skin.
It is our insides?
Two lungs, one brain, one heart
Our bodies.
Or is it something else?
Something that’s learned, but not taught?
Hidden, yet seen
Something that you can’t sell, or trade, or buy
yet is priceless,
Is it our spirit? Is it our strength
That makes us human?
What makes us people?
Is it the things that we tell ourselves, or the things that others tell us,
Or is it what we say to other people.
You’re amazing.
You deserve respect.
I need you.
I love you.
Is it the way that we fall and get back up again, or is it the way that we lift others who have fallen?
Are we people because we are people, or because we treat others as though they are the same as we?
Is it our own humanity, or the humanity that we see in others, and love, and respect, and honor in others?
What are we, after all, but a reflection of ourselves, and of our actions, in others.
What makes us people?
