People

A school hallway at night I find the most eerie.

A place once filled with laughter, security, community and love

is left with just the remnants of the past day

Where everything appears abandoned and dreary.

Memories of friendly embraces haunting the hallway,

faint echoes of laughter bouncing from wall to locker,

the remembrance of a teacher's comfort and aid in each classroom.

All these moments will be wiped away by tomorrow,

They are already starting to decay.

Now imagine this everyday, everywhere.

When you go to the grocery store,

when you go to work, or walk down the street.

To be completely alone, like this, is my worst nightmare.

To be alone is to feel vulnerable, abandoned and afraid.

Life without people is one I would not like to know.

I need people or I could not live.

I need them because that’s the only way ideas, love and life is made.

There are about 7.125 billion people in the world

and each individual is a soul I could not live without.

Young, old, man, women, or child

I’ll forever hold onto these people in the palm of my hand.

I will not let go for my fingers are tightly curled.

The strangers, the enemies, the family and the friends.

They are all essential to each beat of my heart.

Take one away and my heart will stutter.

Take them all and my life will end
