People Watching

People
In dresses
In jeans and t-shirts
Emotional messes

People
Poised
Walking around like they own the world
And technically we do…

People
In their head
Out of their mind
Dead eyes
Frozen, confined

Designed to love
But bound for pain
Shutting down everything

People
Different in every way
Playing games
Some for smiles
others for gain

Rooted in two things
Brokenness
And a search for freedom.
Whatever that means…

People watching
in a part of town where people love coffee
a stimulant
Making up for the dead pieces inside of them

People
With their scarves
And scars
And their broken hearts
Their tattoos
And Hawaiian shirts.

Catching eyes across rooms
Chasing one another with flowers
and rings
and promises
Then running away screaming
Yelling
Getting sex changes

because being born is not enough
If it were, we’d never grow up.

People
Creating more people
Little people who will eventually
Chase an other with flowers
Or coffee
Or music

And you hope they don’t run away screaming
like you did.
And you almost hope they don’t
go chasing in the first place

People
And we wonder why.

And as I observe these people
in the part of town that loves coffee
A stimulant
I wonder how the successful ones do it,
And what I’m doing sitting
alone
Watching
