People Who Need People

SAT, ACT, GPA, class rank
Where are you going?  What do you want to be?  How did you do?
3000 words by Wednesday, DBQ by the end of the band, don't forget the redox questions, know it all by May

I.
Need.
It.
To.
STOP.

I need the woman who makes it stop.
"Everything keeps going; everything will work out fine; you can handle anything; I love you.
Everything is fine."
And so it is
because she
who has worked here 42 years
is the all-knowing
And she cares about me.

 I Need
it to be enjoyable.

I need the man who makes it enjoyable,
Who teases good-naturedly and grins mischievously
in his championship t-shirts
while grading, without a key, AP Chem. tests
and describing, on the side, the finer details of waxing classic skis.

I Need
it too make sense.

I need the woman who makes it make sense.
Humanity, morality, education, and values
English classes,innocence, history, and food
she talks about with me
as if I might know as much
if differently
than she.
"Thanks for asking," she says.
"You can always ask."

I Need
it to be ranted and joked about and ignored.

I need the friends who rant about it,
indignantly,
self-righteously
commiserating its unjustified existence.
The friends who joke about it
daringly,
defiantly
and, in camaraderie,
ignore it with great purpose.

I Need
to be understood.

I need the woman who understands me.
The one who loves mushrooms and mud
and with her smirking and banter
curiosity and laughter
so genuine I take her advice.

And

I
Need
Unconditional Love.

I need my parents, who love me unconditionally.
My mom,
with puzzles and kisses and pasta,
who never stops believing in me.
My dad,
with bikes and hugs and baseball,
who wants only the best for me
and who sings
about "people
who need people"
being the "luckiest people in the world."

Lucky to need?
Luck to have people to need.

I
not only Need
but have
many people.
How lucky am I?
