Perfect gift

when you were young
the responsibility of your younger peers were dumped on you
but you were young
you didn't know it wasn't normal, that it wasn't right, that it wasn't your responsibility
you took it silently 'cause it was what you were used to

"you can look after him"
you were never asked, just told
you didn't know any different
you didn't know that it was your choice, that you could say no
cause you were never asked, just told

"she's such a sweetheart, she does it all the time"
you get praised which makes you uncomfortable
'cause you don't want that praise, you don't want to do it all the time
but you did anyway
'cause you did want a praise, just not for that
but that's all you were praised for

"she always looks after him, it's quite disgusting"
your older peers share their disgust of your babysitting with others
but as much as they like to share their negative opinions, they still sit on their ass and bitch about it
they 'hate' it, but they won't help you

"I feel sorry for you"
shut up
shut up
shut up..
they feel sorry for you? that's nice
they wish they could help you?
well isn't that funny..
did they know you can?
why yes they did
did they totally dismiss helping you, but instead made a sob story out of you?
abso-f*cking-lutely
but not your sob story, no
they worded it like it was theirs, took all the attention for it,
not that you wanted it

"she's never complained before!"
you never got the chance too
you were a child, forced to grow too fast..
you knew how to change a nappy before you knew your times tables
you wake up in the middle of the night to feed them,
going to school the next day exhausted
but it was normal for you, you didn't know you could complain

"can I go to .......'s house?"
you ask to sleep at friends houses to escape
but when your at their house all you feel is guilt
'cause you don't know if they need to be looked after
if they're being looked after.
you go home the next day and hold them
feeling if they're just that little bit skinnier
but they're not so your okay
'cause they're okay

"she's so good with him"
you've become his second mum
'cause he didn't come out of you but he depends on you completely
instead of worrying about what you want for Christmas
you're worrying about him, did he feel hot? is he sick?
he goes to the doctor, but instead of his mum answering their questions, you are
'cause you know everything and she knows nothing

eventually, you learn to say no and they start taking responsibility, thank god
but you don't know how to be a child anymore
so it's a struggle to adapt to that life
'cause for years you've been the mum
and now your not

"it's quite tragic, how much responsibility she has"
you listen years later about how that young girl has so much responsibility
and you feel for her 'cause she's you
the only difference? she's getting help..
from that one person who wouldn't help you..
and that hurts
that f*cking hurts
'cause that means that that little girl was worth a childhood in other people's eyes
but you never were
which is a load of bullshit

"it feels so good to help her, to know she's living right"
you hate hearing that
hearing that she's getting the help and you didn't
you don't hate her though, 'cause she does deserve to live right
you hate them
because it took them 5 years to open their f*cking damn eyes and you lost your childhood,
one childhood = revelation
*clap clap clap*

you took my childhood like it was a gift just for you
but I'm okay with it
'cause you wrapped it up and gave it to that little girl
and to me, that's the perfect gift for her...
