Perfect Imperfections

You called me stupid,

Incompetent.

You said that I would never be smarter than him.

I could work as hard as I wanted,

But I lacked the mental capacity.

I could not “afford” to play,

I needed to spend my time studying

Because I was falling behind.

You looked at me and smirked,

“Stop eating, lose some weight

Or else you won’t be pretty,

And no boy will like you,”

You said.

I was six,

And I believed every word you uttered.

You said you did it for my own good,

Because you loved me,

Because I needed realization.

But you didn’t get it.

You destroyed me,

Crushed every bit of my esteem.

I suffered an extreme adolescent phase,

Starved myself,

Isolated myself,

Hated every bit of my composition.

Because it was you,

Who made me think I was worthless.

But I’m not.

Because I’m not dumb,

Nor am I fat,

Nor am I incompetent.

I am everything I wanted myself to be.

I stand in the mirror,

And I see a wide eyes

That stare back with wonder,

A smile,

That shines brighter than the stars,

Long, sleek hair,

That glistens in the light,

Rosy cheeks,

That radiate with warmth.

I stand on a sturdy frame,

That screams

“I am healthy,

I am strong,

I am beautiful.”

Stupid,

That I am not.

Because one of the most

Prestigious universities

Wanted me.

Because stupid people do not crave,

Or yearn for every opportunity to gain knowledge.

But I do not need to prove

My intelligence to you.

It’s funny

How you neglected what’s most important,

Character.

I blossomed

Into a person that I am very proud of,

Not because I proved that I am worthy,

But because I grew,

And matured.

I developed my own morals,

My own personality,

My own values.

I know who I am,

What I want,

What I believe in.

I believe that

No one should be kicked down,

And told that she’s not beautiful.

Because even nature has its flaws,

But no one ever criticized nature

For its perfect imperfections.
