Perfection (#NoFilter Scholarship Slam)

Millennial kids call out magazines

Claiming Photoshop has taken beauty to new extremes

Wanting media to emphasize the beauty of imperfection

When really we need to see our reflection

We delete and untag every unflattering photo

And only take selfies when the light is just so

Then further distort the original

With filters and editing until the picture is unrecognizable

Then we sum up this facade, so untrue

With a vague hashtag to two

But the complexities of life can't be summed up

In 140 characters, that's just not enough

A society obsessed with zombies

Is allowing phones to turn us into these

But instead of eating brains, we're

Mindless consumers who believe all we see and hear

Believe a filter is the only way

To be seen as beautiful these days

Letting movies and TV

Determine who we are and who we try to be

The bravest one's in culture are those who don't follow it

Who are ok with the fact that they're not Pinterest perfect

Who post on Instagram without a filter to mask imperfections

Even if that means not getting as many "likes" as your filtered friends

Nature is not the only thing beautiful enough to not need filters

Or whatever trend commercials try to sell you

Filters are just the newest way we are told we need to act like we're perfect

But Millennial kids could be the first not to believe it
