The Perfectionists' Lair

Perfection was my biggest mistake

It kidnapped me with its invisible hands and choked me whenever I tried to run after acceptance

It took me to its lair that was filled with the scent of onions, oh my eyes!

I started to feel anxious about myself and what would happen to me next

Would it kill me if I did something wrong? And so it threatened me to stay

It told me if I ran, everyone in my life would see me as a failure and throw me out

It sat me down on a chair in the room and chained me up so I wouldn’t escape

Then it blindfolded me so I wouldn’t know where to turn to

Finally it injected my mouth with lidocaine so I wouldn’t feel a thing, and sewn my lips together

I couldn’t have known because I didn't feel its presence

I couldn’t yell for help, or talk at all

All I had left was my ears and emotions

Perfection played its favorite “song” whenever it knew my mind was at peace

It had a phonograph laying in the corner of the room

It started to play a record, I heard a voice talking through it

I noticed something, the voice was mine

My voice started saying all the responsibilities I had to do and the consequences that came with it

But perfection would not change the song because it was willing for me remember it whenever it stopped

It didn’t care for my emotions whether I felt restless or started to cry

Perfection tortured me in its lair for nine years until I would remember it’s routine by heart

I learned to not say a thing, worry about myself and others thoughts, and it’s number one rule

Mistakes equals failure and that’s why you should never make one

I know if I did, I would have to punish myself for it because it was my responsibility

Perfection then led me outside and told me to get the best job and do the best I can in everything

And so I did, I bit more than I could chew in high school

I joined clubs and made promises, thinking I could accomplish it all because I was “perfect”

Whenever I did something amazing, the feeling of dissatisfaction would crawl into my skull

I thought piling myself with work would distract me from this itch, this pain!

It all ended up with me worrying about the smallest things and regret shedding tears

I knew I had to change this habit, but it would take a lot of time for realization

I cherished the support I never asked for and started to feel the seam on my mouth to tear apart

I finally could use my mouth to talk, to ask people for help if I didn’t know the answer

The people around me, my friends shook my emotions until I felt numb

My teachers slapped my regrets and told me to gather myself together for the worse in life

My family told me to accept and would be there for me until the end in life

I felt a new lining growing on me, the better me with a better mindset

Wisdom

And now I have made my own rule to myself

Flow free like water and accept the mistakes since this will make you into the perfect person you want to be
