Perhaps It's Easy

Perhaps it is easy for those who have open-minded parents to say, “Just tell her.” But when you have heard your whole life that this is not acceptable; when you have seen her talk with disgust and hate; when you know how crushed she would be if you were to talk to her about who you really are and what you believe; when you have sat next to her in church as they talk down upon it and you see nothing but complete agreement in her eyes; when you walk by another girl who has a t-shirt saying, “Love is love,” and you see her face scrunch up in disagreement; when you drive downtown while there is a gay pride march happening and she yells and yells and looks at me wanting me to say something showing I concur; when you have been in a room filled with the people you love and they begin talking about your cousin who has come out as gay and they disown him now; when you are sent to a bible camp and the whole time the pastor talks about same sex like that is the only “issue” in the world; when you belong to a family that believes your sexuality is your identity and if you are gay you are nothing else, may as well be sent to hell now; when you sit in church three times a week and you want to believe in an all-loving God but you struggle when you see these people talk with such hate towards the one thing you are; when you wish everyday that you could just be different so you could feel loved and accepted and be your true self in front of your family-- then you will understand why I find it difficult to just tell her.
