The Perils of War
Cannon guns blast thunderously over a blood drenched battle field,
As anxious soldiers in tarnished brass, stand fast to gather up their courage, nerves and wills.
Each man in honor bearing in hand his fire arm in battle to fight,
Marching onward are those brave soldiers, shoulder to shoulder towards their fate into that dark ominous night.
.
Now all that does matter is paper and pen for we know if not tonight, that tomorrows the end
So we scribble in tears our final goodbyes to our family and dearest of friends
And for a second of home we are allowed to reminisce
For all in the now we will soon come sadly to miss
Until once more we are pulled back to the inescapable present
Stupor men that once cursed God are now for our lives groveling in mud and with prayerful lips we are reverent
The enemy sends down live rounds from behind deeply dug out trenches
One grazes pass my metal helmet missing miraculously my temple by inches
Our enemies come banging and bashing as they draw closer to our line
Our bayonets come to clashes
As we march into double time
Men are snarling and squealing as through the night is more killing
And the ground becomes greasy with gore
To take a life
There is not a plight that’s more chilling
Yet to make every man must be willing
For these are the dictates of war
And morning comes revealing
An ugly truth less appealing
Our comrades corpses washed up on the sands of a bloody shore.
