A Person Like You
I was staring at you, hoping you would look back
You didn’t
I told myself not to be stupid.
No way would person like you, be with a person like me
I was an average person.
Simple, unsociable, awkward.
A stereotype of an introvert.
I looked at you, and your eyes caught mine.
You quickly looked away
I didn’t think twice about it, but my heart beat faster.
No way would a person like you, be with a person like me
I passed by and saw your face
A small smile
I stood, mesmerized
You, of all people, smiled at me
But there is no way would a person like you, be with a person like me.
I turned and saw eyes
Shining black eyes
Staring at me.
You stood and slowly walked to me
I sat still, shocked.
Still, I thought, there is no way would a person like you, be with a person like me.
Years pass, and I see your hands with another
Yet, I smiled. Those black eyes filled with love, was enough for me.
But, the next thing I know, your hands are empty again.
So are your eyes.
Those shining black eyes turned into a chasm.
I stood, and slowly walked over
And placed my hands in yours.
The eyes, once dull, suddenly sparked
I told you it was going to be okay, that you would find another
You shook your head and smiled once again.
You told me told me it didn’t matter, as long as I was still his friend.
A friend, I thought. Nothing more.
Because there is no way would a person like you, be with a person like me
I stayed with you a few more years until we went our separate ways.
Before that, though, I told you how I truly felt for all those years.
And your eyes - oh your eyes - lit up.
You smiled and said to me:
“I only thought, all those years, that there is no way would a person like you, be with a person like me.”
