Perspective

Instead of your desk

sit on the floor during class.

Observe how people fidget

and play Four Pictures One Word.

Sounds like porn.

Stand on your chair,

see the tops of everyones heads.

Look at how they write

or how they sleep

or obviously text on their iPhones.

Sit in the back seat

and watch out the rear window,

or one of the side mirrors.

But don't get car sick

all over your mom’s leather seats.

Watch TV upside down.

See what details you notice.

Instead of a main character,

watch what is happening behind them.

There can be people making faces

at the camera

that you have never bothered

to notice.

Lay on the floor

and look at the ceiling.

Notice every crack

and every water stain.

Roll over and

look at the carpet.

Notice every colour

and speck of dirt

dragged in by your dogs.

Tiny details can

jump off the pages

of your own story

and into your lap.
