Perspective

I see her standing there- in the doorway Looking at me with a young girl's curiosity. Uncertain if she likes what she sees. As she slowly walks closer, she studies my face. Her eyes are fixated on mine And I feel myself grow uneasy. I divert my eyes, hoping to shield her from the parts I don't want her to know- not yet. She'll know soon enough. Let her be young. Let her be naive and ignorant. Ignorant from the cruelty in the world- in her world soon to come. I look back at her as a tear escapes my eye. She manages a smile, still pure from understanding What it means for a heart to ache. Did I fail her? Did I fail me? Because all I see is a two year old me Uncertain if she likes who she will be at nineteen.
