petrichor

i hear the rain

coming through my open window

and onto my windowsill

the thunder roaring in the distance

it is getting closer

louder than before

the sky gets darker

as i watch the storm roll in

i see the birds taking cover

perching on limbs with their families

they too are preparing for this storm

my windowsill is drenched now

dripping onto my floor

soaking my carpet and the stray blanket

bunched up in a ball where my dogs lay

i open up my window even more

not caring about the water

running down the wall

i open it so i can smell the rain

so i can smell the earth

drinking up as much rain as it can handle

the earth during storms

remind me of me

soaking up as much life as i can handle

before it all goes away

petrichor smells like freedom

and i ache for freedom
