The Phantom's Tale

I built the theatre. It was mine before it was yours. All I wanted was love. Someone to love me for my own sake. That was all. The world did not oblige. So I created my own world And disappeared from yours. I became a shade, a shadow, A shell of what I could have been. I faded into the walls And hid behind the mirrors. But I still listened. And then I heard a voice. The voice of an angel, who sang like no other, She ignited my heart with her voice And I called out to her with my own… She answered me. I loved, But I did not know how to love. I took her through the mirrors, To my house on the lake And I sang to her. I was her Angel of Music. But she feared me. So I let her go… And she came back. I was overjoyed, I thought she was mine, and yet As I watched, I realized That I was not hers. Her heart, another man had already claimed For his own. I made her a deal. ‘Start a new life with me Buy his freedom with your love Refuse me and you will send your lover to his death. This is the point- This is the point of no return.’ And she gave me her love With tears streaming down her face. All I wanted was love. Someone to love me for my own sake. That was all. She obliged. My heart broke, And I let her go. She left with her lover And married him. And I faded back into the walls of the opera house And gave her peace. It is possible to die of love Because I did.
