The Phoenix
I am a phoenix
Engulfed in flames
Burned to the ground
Reduced to ashes
Left with nothing save my thoughts
Years ago
My life began to spiral
Downward
As my ego rose, my spirits fell
Arrogance and egotism were breadcrumbs that kept me
Within an inch of my life
On the outside I feigned confidence
But on the inside I was as empty as a rotting carcass
A year later, I had nothing
No friends to turn to, no place to call home
I was a lost bird without a nest
Trapped within the confines of my own mind
I’d try to build safe havens, yet they kept falling apart
The twigs couldn’t help from snapping
But within this continual struggle, there is something for which I can hope
Did you know that the same voice I use to scream at myself in the bathroom mirror
I use to sing my baby brother to sleep
Did you know that the same eyes into whose reflection I cannot look
I use to console my loved ones in times of need
Did you know that these same hands which have tried to take my own life
I use to play piano to lessen the pain of others
In times of darkness, I always tell myself
I am a phoenix
And when life burns me to the ground and
Leaves me charred and broken
I will be born anew
Once again
