Phoenix: From Ashes to Dust

I’ve been spending days on jet lag,

Drifting through life,

Just flowing with the currents

Downstream,

Backwards.

I’ve been attempting to relieve myself of the pain

Of the rocks and logs stabbing into me

By poisoning my soul with potions and elixirs

And clouding my mind with blazing distractions

And burning aspirations

To be free.

I’ve been sparking forest fires in my mind

With hopes that maybe a path to

Redemption, will reveal itself

If nothing is in the way.

I’ve been allowing the flames to scorch

My conscience in hopes that the smoke

Will rise, kiss the ceiling of the atmosphere

Inside of me,

And then rain down in a gentle mist,

Cloaking the flames,

Lulling them to sleep,

In order to reset my world as I know it.

I’ve been igniting myself,

Waiting, watching, anticipating

The spark of one of the wicks

Dangling from my mind,

So that I can count down

The seconds,

Until I burst into glorious

Flames

Of the boldest blues, and the warmest whites,

And the coldest oranges and reds,

And then drift into a pile of lump ashes

Awaiting the hour that life is breathed into me,

Once more,

Like a mighty Phoenix descended from the Sphinx of Giza.

But I am not of Egypt,

And I am no Phoenix
