Photo Book

I was a little surprised when you smiled

And spoke to me like we’re good friends.

I was more surprised when I realized

Your words didn’t make my heart skip a beat.

It is starting to seem like my feelings

Are just an old memory, just like a

Dusty photo book that has been stored on

A shelf or hidden in a closet. I

Remember those times when I would open

That book very often. I did not see

Back then how I cared too much. It was a

Big deal, but too big, and I let myself

Get hurt by my own feelings.

It all started out so small, but like any

Feeling or thought it grew and grew until

It had rooted itself deep in my heart.

You did nothing wrong, you were unaware

Of how I really felt. But it did not

Help that you always paid me but very

Little attention. Did it take someone

Else, who always talked to me a lot more,

To snap me out of my own feelings? Or

Did I just finally feel ready to

Move on, and put the photo book away?

It matters not, it is all in the past,

And I know I have grown through all of it.

I love the metaphorical possibilities of the photo book and its connection to memory. :)
