Piece of Love

Shotguns ring

Light beams

Sirens scream

As I watched his body bleed

This piece of love

Who watched his daddy’s black body swing beneath a rope hung from a tree

This piece of love

Cut from kente cloth

Drug by his feet trynna hold onto the African sand beneath

separated from the rest

Poked, proded, tortured, branded

At their behest

Laid in the middle of the street

The cold hard dirty cement

Face pressed down in defeat

He laid there

Spitting up blood

Coughing up hate

Tears soaked in sorrow

Eyes so full of pain

There’s no more tomorrow

He laid there

He laid there

And I watched his eyes close

And in the midst of my sobs and screams

I couldn’t breathe

Cause in that moment

In that time

His pain was gone

He was finally free

But that moment only did last a while before the shotgun pierced a soul again and that pain was passed onto me

He laid there

He laid there

They pulled me away

But he still laid there

He laid there til the end of night

People walked by and watched the end of his life

But he never did die

Because in me his pain is still alive

In me I still carry on his fight
