Pine Trees

Gazing out the window is not a pastime here

My plans are to run and leap

Outside is where I’m meant to be.

You don’t hear the words “I wish I was” around here

No sandy beach or forest for me

No glistening water or majestic palms

Just no cares in the world for me.

My best friend is the wind

She is the tall towering trees.

She is the will that lifts me higher and higher

She has no fears at all.

There is no “last time” I was barefoot

No beginning or end

Just sole against the soft ground

All summer long.

In the tree, the highest I’m allowed

The breeze gently sways

As the smell of pine surrounds me

So consuming I can almost taste it

I feel the strong, reassuring bark under me

Knowing I’m safe from the unforgiving ground far below.

I wish I was in this place,

Right now in this moment

As if I was a fairy, with the wind beneath my wings.

This is not a poem about where I wish to be,

This is a poem about me loving where I am already

Far up in the pine trees.
