Play Pretend
As little kids we play pretend
And dress up in costumes that seem to have no end
We giggle, we laugh, we know who we are
As little dreamers, we wished on that same star
You know the one I mean,
The one to the right, where nothing is as it seems
Where friends abound and everyone listens
Where no tears are allowed to glisten
Peter Pan and the Lost Boys dance
Their smiles, their laughter can put you in a trance
Until one day, a whisper, a yell
Is enough to break through their innocent spell
Eyes open wide, look around the room,
Only to find an elephant that is soon to meet it's doom?
Laughter dissipates
Children hesitate
Adults...reiterate
Time to grow up. To be mature.
In this world, that's the only way to endure.
Get a job, make ends meet
Even if it means you're heart will never feel complete
Dress like this - no, not like that
Remember modest women don't wear straps!
No, don't be her friend you see
One day she will leave you...there's no loyalty
Be smart, be capable, wear a smile
Even if behind it lies a broken and lonely child.
