Plenty To Survive
Plenty to Survive
There was a happy little bird named Blueheart
Whose dream was to fly high to the sky
Her wings were weaker than other birds’
Her nest more cramped than others’
But she had plenty to survive.
She lived in a cozy little forest
With scarce bits of food to find
But Blueheart was grateful eating what she could
To give her the strength to fly high
There was still plenty to survive.
It was a dark forest, but it was home
Blueheart had plenty to survive
But she thought if she could touch the beams of the sun,
She would one day reach a place
With much more than plenty to survive.
Blueheart was out finding food one day
When a smiling man approached her
Come with me, he said
I’ll help you fly higher to the sun, he said
I’ll provide you with more than plenty to survive, he said
The cozy forest didn’t look so cozy anymore
It just seemed meager and poor
There was not enough food nor space
To fly high to the sky
She just wanted more than plenty to survive.
As soon as Blueheart followed the smiling man
He shoved her inside of a dark cage
All traces of kindness were gone
She was alone in the dark
With less than plenty to survive.
Blueheart no longer had a name
Her identity was now that of 018883737888,
The number branded onto her feeble wings,
Holding her down so she could never fly high.
She just wanted to survive.
Blueheart had only wished to fly high in the sky
But now she was just 018883737888
Merely a number confined to the bars of its cage
Being sold to others repeatedly.
018883737888 missed having plenty to survive.
Blueheart’s fear and anger towards the man
Soon turned to anger towards 018883737888
Why did I fall for his trick, 018883737888 asked itself
Why did I agree to come here, 018883737888 asked itself
Why did I wish for more than plenty to survive?
One day, a hand reached into 018883737888’s cage
It had a red X in the middle of the palm
The hand gently grasped Blueheart
And pulled her out of the darkness
Let us help you survive, soft voices coaxed
The red Xs had saved Blueheart
She was no longer 018883737888
She was back to being Blueheart
Back to her little forest
And given plenty to survive
Now, she appreciated the cozy forest
She appreciated her snug nest
She appreciated her light wings
She appreciated the small but abundant food
She realized she had always had more than plenty to survive.
Just like that, Blueheart’s darkest days were over.
With a soft smile on her face
She began her flight
All the way to the horizon of the sunset.
She had survived;
