A Poem
Around the world, across the sea,
From common folks, like you, like me
A poem written, a story told
A sea of human thoughts unfold
-
A laugh, a sigh, a little smile,
A tender word, and all the while
The poet's ink scribed on a page
Can transcend time, or human age
-
A verse can say "I care; I'm here"
Can lift a soul, or dry a tear.
The very words can touch a heart
Can end a quarr'l, or make a start.
-
The lines, the rhymes, the meter beat
The assonnance, once on the sheet
Create a beauty all their own,
Will make you grin, or give a groan!
-
They herald great heroic deeds
Exposing our soul's deepest needs
What's felt, what's thought, what's seen and known,
Our weakness, strength, and mischief shown
-
A complex thread of pondering
Or simple, tasteless babbling
Immortal ones live on and on
While others, foolish, die by dawn
-
Enriched, we read. Informed, we see
If moved, we share. If warned, we flee
A wordsmith can with simple things
Pull hearts with words; poetic strings
-
If lengthy, short, or couplet fair
About a bird, the moon, the air
Read on, and think "What does this mean?"
And live the glory that you've gleaned.
