- the hyphen something that was not supposed to be even though we live in the land of opportunity a myriad of cultures a soup of heritage Yet they never wanted a spoon in the bowl to mix and stir because a hyphen was never supposed to be there was black there was white there was yellow even red but there was not supposed to be black-white white-yellow yellow-red And so the white said no, no, no because they did not like the blend so with their laws and their doors they spread the divide but then she said no and the feet stomped on for the right to the same after lost battles broken heartache and souls faded there was the 13, 14, 15 and with them came the stir and the right to be a hyphen
