A Poem Is

A poem is

Simple, really.

Its words go in

Straight lines, only

Going where the

Writer tells them to.

Or, that's what people

Think. The truth is quite

Different. But I suppose

Most people don't realize

That. Maybe they don't

Want to. But they should.

Because a poem

Is so much more than

Words on a page,

Penciled in with delicate

Care. Poetry can be

Reckless. It can be a

Messy, inspired jumble of

Nonsense, or a nest

Made up of words that

Sound like twigs and

Feathers, nestled

Together to form a

Safe place.

A poem can go in straight

Lines. Sometimes it should.

Other times, it spirals out of

Control, whirling away from its

Intended destination like a

Bird, lost in a storm.

Poetry is pure emotion. It

Shows us who we are, our

Deepest thoughts and

Fears. It is who you

Want to be, and who you are

Afraid you will

Become. A poem is so

Much more than just

Words - it is You.
