A Poem For The Unknown Soldier
I don't know you,
I don't know your name,
but if I called you Jim,
would you be okay with him?
I pray for your family,
I pray for peace,
I pray that you're in heaven,
and your pain has finally ceased.
I came here today
to touch your tombstone,
speak your name.
But what is your name? Unknown.
Were you a Matt, a Joe,
a Tom, a Larry?
Or did you have a name
like that famous wizard, Harry?
Were you in love?
Were you single?
Were you dating?
Did you marry?
I came to speak your name,
but you don't have one now.
When was the last time
You were called by name?
That long?
Wow.
I don't know you or your name,
All I know is you served, but not for fame.
Why was it that you served and died,
and now are buried in the countryside?
At Arlington National Cemetery, used by many
To scare young people from war.
Whatever the reason,
You didn't shirk your duty,
You chose to stand up,
You chose to go,
Whatever the season.
And what do I know?
I know what country you fought for and where you are buried.
Now what do I know?
What do I know?
