Poems to Last a Lifetime

Poetry has affected me in so many ways

Through music, and stories,

From when I was little all the way up to today. 

Simple life lessons taught through a rhyme

In books by Shell Silverstein and Dr. Seuss

Inspiring with characters and colors alike

Teaching grammar, spelling, and friendship 

All of the things that a young child needs

Found in the books read every night

Where the books left off the music began

A different type of poem with a different theme. 

These taught about love, and caring for others. 

They taught me to sing and move to the rhythm 

I’ll never loose that love for the musical art

It is what I pursue in my years to come

I want to spread my love and share more memories. 

Poetry has saved me in my darkest days

Providing an outlet for unspoken thoughts

Writing helped me organize my opinions

Speaking it helped me move on 

The power of rhythm, the power of rhyme 

Are something I’ll cherish until the end of time. 

And though not all poems go as planned

Each word is a step in the journey ahead.
