Poetic Truths

You with your smile

as I recite my rhyme

me with my sugar coated glazed

eyes, staring through your soul

The poetry, the words,

the truth and the rhyme

spoken between me and you.

Does my poetry

make you want to

fly to the heavens like

Maya Angelou’s did

You with teary eyes

as we listen to Tupac

Shakur’s words of wisdom.

Do I speak the truth of

African American pain

like Angelou and Shakur

This is us

this is

you, me, and the poetry

This is us

speaking the poetic truths

of the world

Speaking for women

like Maya did once upon a time

for young black bothers and young

black mothers like Tupac did with

music. We speak for our gay brothers

and sisters. For those who feel as if

they have no future.

This is what our poetry does;

it gives hope, and shares dreams.
