Poetry Gives Me

Just one more stanza, and I’ll have my fix

I beg of you, just read it to me

Say it slow so i can feel the rhythm

Oh yes, just like that!

Tell me, is she happy?

What do you mean “who”?

The poet!!

She’s always writing these sad, musicless songs

And they’re all connected

They say the same things, yet have a different moral

She’s been hurt

Trust me, I can tell

How?

Well, I am the person she’s talking about, silly

How do I know?

The details are just too similar NOT to be me!

She tells me, through the musicless songs, that I have to stay strong

That though I can’t verbalize this suffering

I can damn sure write it out

It doesn’t need to rhyme

It doesn’t need to have alliteration

It needs my truth

And it helps

It’s the breakthrough that I needed to change

It’s the answer to the question of how to cope

It has become my addiction

It has become my life

And with every stanza comes reassurance

The advice I couldn’t say to myself, but knew all along

You must think I’m crazy

Making you read me the poems of my youth

But I need you to

My happiness depends on it
