Poetry in Me

There are many types of poetry

But I've always found comfort in rhyme

One day I learned I couldn't speak certain things

So I kept it all in my mind.

A teacher gave me a special license

At the ripe age of nine;

She gave me a poet's license

And I swear it couldn't have come at a better time.

Some things others just couldn't understand

Or maybe I didn't want them to know.

Whether it was a secret affair within myself

Or another expressive window,

Poetry gave me a sense of freedom

And a creative release.

I am a poet for the rest of my life

Because without writing,

My sense of existence would cease.

This poem was inspired by the questions "what does poetry mean to you" and "why do you write." I like to write simple and straight forward poems, because as I state in Poetry in Me, this is me expressing myself. And when I express myself, it is like I am having a conversation, whether it be with the reader or with myself. But I'm just talking, telling you a story, while I relive some memories that inspired the lines that you read.
