The Poetry Road

My mom read me many stories,

among them was Shel Silverstein,

and I marveled at their glories,

even as I became a teen.

I tried to be like Silverstein,

but I felt that my poems were powerless,

as I tried to be a poetry queen,

and I was left flowerless.

I then found Shakespeare,

and his profound intensity,

which hit me like a spear,

and which held density.

And now I write with words so compelling,

I feel that I will burst through the ceiling.
