Poetry Taught Me About Me

Oftentimes people have a voice

sometimes people create it

poetry helped me find words to say

before I had the courage to say them

My first poem put my heartbreak to a beat

the second one gave the hope in my hopelessness new feat

I learned how to walk in a poem

in a time where I was too damaged to fly

I took stock in poems

And made bounty of my life

It is poetry that saved me

and helped me create me
