Poetry's Gift

Poetry is a friend,

A resource, a relief.

Poetry has taught me to be,

Reckless

Fearless

Strong.

Poetry has taught me that it is okay to be messed up,

To be damaged, scarred.

To be imperfect, to be difficult.

Poetry has taught me that IT IS okay to hurt,

To cry, to be mad.

To get mad.

Poetry has taught me to not hate, but to love.

To show love because it showed love to me when nothing else did.

Poetry has taught me that in order to move on, I need to relieve myself.

Poetry has taught me to rely on it for comfort when I felt I had no one.

Poetry allowed me to be messy, to be loud, to be fierce because

Poetry doesn’t judge. Doesn’t hate. Doesn’t exclude or abuse

Poetry taught me that I can be strong when it seems all the strength I had disappeared.

Poetry taught me that I can be okay,

That poetry is a friend,

A resource, a relief.
